Chapter 19

Hand trembling, Georgina stared at the walkie-talkie as if it might grow wings and fly away.

But it did nothing. It was just a piece of wet, broken plastic.

It wasn’t going to help her.

Nothing and nobody was.

It was only her now.

Remember, Georgina, if you sit around and wait for someone to save you, they never will. You need to be proactive.

“Georgina? Georgina, is that you?”

Georgina held her breath.

It couldn’t possibly be Chase, could it?

“Georgina?”

But it was.

Georgina clicked the button.

“Chase? Is it really you?”

“Yes, oh, God yes. Where are you? Are you in the cafeteria?”

There was relief and desperation in her aunt’s voice. She’d heard the first many times, but the second was new to Georgina.

And it frightened her.

“No, Martin—” her voice hitched. “The security guard told me to stay in the caf, left me in charge, but I couldn’t. I remember what you said, how we shouldn’t wait for help… that by the time help comes, it’s already too late.”

When Georgina said Martin’s name, she couldn’t help but look at the man.

There was an uncanny stillness about him, which was wholly unnatural.

For a good three count, Chase said nothing and Georgina was worried that the walkie had broken, that the water had finally short-circuited whatever it was that made the damn thing work.

But then her aunt said, “That’s not what I meant, Georgina. You have to go back. Go back to the cafeteria. Go there now and wait.”

Georgina sobbed.

“I saw… I saw Mia and John. They had backpacks and went into the bathroom. Then… oh, God… the explosion. I saw one of them come out, they were so burnt. So… burnt.”

Someone else came on the line the second she let go of the button, a voice Georgina didn’t recognize.

“Did you see what kind of guns they had?”

Georgina closed her eyes. She pictured the person staggering out of the bathroom, the left half of their face like burnt marshmallows.

“I didn’t… I didn’t see a gun. But they had backpacks. Chase, I’m scared.”

Her aunt returned.

“I know. Go back to the cafeteria.”

“Can you… can you come in?”

Can you save us?

“We’re trying. Just go back, Georgina. Stay out of sight. Hide.”

“Okay. Okay, I—I love you, Chase. I—”

“Put down the walkie-talkie. Now.”

Georgina gasped and the device fell from her hand. She immediately went to grab it but stopped short when she raised her eyes and stared directly into the barrel of a gun.

“Don’t.”

***

“Georgina? Georgina?” Chase rapidly clicked the button, all the while repeating her niece’s name.

She’d heard it, they’d all heard it.

Put down the walkie-talkie. Now.

A male voice, a kid holding a gun, no doubt.

A killer.

A fucking killer

Chase’s eyes met Stitts’.

“We have to get in there now. Right fucking now!”

Stitts just stared at her, unsure of what to do.

Things had changed.

Before, Chase hadn’t wanted to rush in, knew that this would put all the students’ lives in danger.

But as much as she wanted to think that she could put her personal feelings aside, the greater good and all that, it was impossible.

This was Georgina.

Nobody else mattered.
